Una delle più piccole distribuzioni di Windows XP SP3. Puoi usare il 99% dei programmi esistenti e finora nessuno ha riportato giochi non funzionanti in MicroXP.
Un singolo click apre questa versione di Windows indipendente dal sistema operativo ospitante che consente di navigare in sicurezza, testare applicazioni prima di installarle nel S.O. “ufficiale”, verificare la presenza di virus in un ambiente isolato ecc.

Ottimo, e’ sufficiente il doppio click del mouse sull’eseguibile per avviarlo; velocissimo, in pochi secondi il sistema virtualizzato e’ operativo in una finestra senza l’ausilio di software di virtualizzazione tipo VMware ne tantomeno fantomatici player. Si e’ subito connessi alla rete se la macchina ospitante e’ connessa (testata connessione in wireless, con modem usb e chiavetta usb umts). Ottimo per testare software ma anche per quei software non compatibili con Win7, senza la necessita’ di installare WindowsXP su un’altra partizione, insomma pronto all’uso!

Calcolando che sono riuscito a farlo girare in questa macchina…

…consiglio comunque almeno 512 MB di ram se no si perde la pazienza ad avviare i software nel sistema portable

This has to be one of the smallest Windows XP installations out there. Whats more – you can use 99% of the programs you always use and up to now there is not one single report of any game not working in MicroXP.

This install includes default XP drivers for Ethernet/Sound/SCSI/RAID
It has all languages kept, except Chinese/Japanese/Korean.
It has all keyboard layout choices kept.
It also has Service Pack 3 final slipstreamed into it.
LAN Networking is now possible – Use Map Network Drive and just put the computer name of the computer you want to network with.
Digital Cameras and Scanners can also now be used.
Opera 2011 included with FTP and Email capabilities.
CCleaner for HDD & Registry cleaning procedures and Privacy.

Gimp vs Photoshop

I’m no graphics professional, but like probably most of you, I do need to edit photos from time to time. I used Adobe Photoshop before since it is the most widely used image manipulating software. But when I started using Linux, things changed.

Since GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is included by default in most Linux distros, I had no other choice but to try it. I then became more and more comfortable using it that I completely forgot about Photoshop. I know that I can still install Photoshop in Linux through software virtualization, but no thanks.

Here are my reasons why I made the switch and why I think GIMP is better than Photoshop:

1. GIMP has a simple and easy to use Graphical User Interface compared to a more cluttered working environment in Photoshop.

2. GIMP has a way lighter footprint than Photoshop. You don’t need plenty of disk space to install GIMP. The size of Gimp’s installer is less than 20MB; Photoshop could be around 600MB.

3. GIMP is wicked fast. The minimum recommended RAM requirement to run GIMP is only 128MB. The latest version of Photoshop will probably need 512MB at minimum.

4. GIMP has the right amount of essential features that I need. I think Photoshop is way too bloated and some of its included features are unnecessary.

5. GIMP can read and write most Photoshop native PSD format files, but Photoshop does not support GIMP’s native XCF file format.

6. GIMP has a more powerful automation than Photoshop.

7. GIMP’s open development model means that it is much more readily available on more operating systems, plugin development is not limited by developers and as such has no need to compete with Photoshop; by comparison, access to Adobe Photoshop’s SDK requires authorization.

8. GIMP is available at no cost compared to Photoshop’s hefty price tag.

xpize 5 prossimo al rilascio

Mi sono gia’ occupato di xpize

Prima dell’avvento di Vistamizer era indispensabile, poi e’ diventato forse troppo pesante. La versione 5 pero’ sembra migliorare di molto..

The rumours of xpize’s demise have been greatly exaggerated! Almost a year since the release of the last update to XPize (4.7b2) a new release is on the horizon.

…and this release will be bigger and better than ever before!

xpize 5 (now all lowercase because it’s fashionable) will see the codebase rewritten in C# to remove the dependence on ResHacker and enable further improvements.

Well, it’s more than a rewrite. It’s a total re-organization. More details will be forthcoming in the next few days. But we’re aiming for a release date around Mid-September 2008.

XPize 4.7b2 and earlier editions will still be available, so don’t worry.

Windows Live messenger 9 Beta 2

Oramai siamo giunti alla versione 9 Beta 2 del software di messaggistica istantanea (IM – Chat) Windows Live Messenger.

Quali sono le novità di questa nuova versione?

Bhe, per ora non ci sono grosse novità sul piano delle funzionalità ed, almeno fino al rilascio della versione definitiva, ci dovremmo soffermare all’introduzione di una protezione contro i virus / malware / spyware, la possibilità di personalizzare la classificazione dei contatti secondo “preferiti”… inoltre avremo la possibilità di personalizzare i nostri suoni ed, ad ogni nostro accesso, i nostri contatti potranno ascoltarlo; Personalizzare nella medesima modalità i suoni per i nostri contatti; la possibiiltà di inserire degli avatar animati (come i meego che già potevano essere acquistati); Migliorie riguardo la condivisione di file e cartele (aumentata la velocità magari?); Migliorie nella condivisione dei video; Migliorie sulla personalizzazione per plug-in ed add-on (magari MSN Plus non funzionerà più?!?)..

Le pecche che per ora posso segnalarvi nella versione 9 Beta 2 sono che al momento non è possibile connettersi dietro un server Proxy e che spesso ci segnala l’impossibilità di caricare la nostra rubrica e che, senza di essa, il programma non potrà partire correttamente.

TeamViewer e’ un programma fantastico per il remote desktop management ovvero il poter controllare un computer fisicamente lontano dal nostro via software.

E’ la soluzione ideale quando un vostro amico vi chiama per dirvi che ha un problema al computer e se, per favore, andate a casa sua a sistemarglielo…

Bastera dire all’amico di scaricarsi il software da qui, lanciarlo, comunicarvi la chiave id che il programma genera ad ogni connessione e voi con TeamViewer installato nel vostro pc potrete prendere il controllo del pc altrui.

Tutto questo con un software gratutito, sicuro (dati crittografati) e standalone (non necessita di installazione !!!)
