| Ripper Gang is pleased to announce the final public ISO release of PCLinuxOS 2009.1.
This release features kernel 2.6.26.8.tex3, KDE 3.5.10, Open Office 3.0, Firefox 3.0.7, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, Ktorrent, Frostwire, Amarok, Flash, Java JRE, Compiz-Fusion 3D and much more. We decided to use kde3-5-10 as our default desktop as we could not achieve a similar functionality from kde4. We will however offer kde4 as an alternative desktop environment available from the repository once we stabilize it. PCLinuxOS is an rpm based distribution utilizing apt-get with a Synaptic Software Manager frontend. In addition to the above PCLinuxOS comes with mklivecd GUI, a nice utility to build a custom live CD from your install. Install or remove what you want then remaster your own cd. Great for backups or to give to friends. PCLinuxOS is also known as as rolling release distribution. What that means is you install once and update it when new applications become available from our repository. Ubuntu Eee was started last December. It was just a script which fixed some of the issues that came with Ubuntu when installing it on an EeePC. In June was Ubuntu Eee released as a whole operating system. There was a new release already in September which really showed the potential of Ubuntu Eee. Softpedia ranked Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 “The perfect operating system for your Asus Eee PC!”.
The script back in 2007 was downloaded about 3 000 times, the first release of Ubuntu Eee was downloaded about 60 000 times and Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 has been downloaded over 225 000 times!
With this is Ubuntu Eee ready for it’s next leap. We want to bring the ease of Ubuntu Eee to all netbooks.
Because that’s what it’s been about: it’s easy. It’s the operating system you install and start using, real plug and play. The new release will be rebranded and released on January 1st. We wanted Easy in the new name. We’ve gone over it for several months, though the answer was right in front of us: It’s an Easy (operating system for a) PC – Ubuntu Eee will be rebranded as Easy Peasy.
Some loves the new name while some think it sounds childish. That’s why we have to make a really good looking and professional logo and webpage.

After over a month with name suggestions, discussions and ideas, it’s decided. Ubuntu Eee will be rebranded as ION (or ion if you’d like).
An ion is an atom or molecule which has lost or gained one or more valence electrons, giving it a positive or negative electrical charge.
Thanks a lot for all of your comments and great ideas! Ubuntu Eee would have ended up as RamviX or something if it didn’t have such an amazing community around it.

MILANO – La Sardegna spinge sull’acceleratore dell’innovazione con un ddl approvato dalla Giunta che potrebbe diventare legge regionale. E tutta l’Amministrazione Pubblica sarda passerebbe al sistema operativo GNU/Linux. Tra gli aspetti più innovativi contenuti nel disegno vi sono il diritto all’uso delle tecnologie, la partecipazione democratica, l’alfabetizzazione informatica, la ricerca per lo sviluppo delle imprese nel territorio.
I VANTAGGI – Il software libero, che permette a chiunque di utilizzarlo e ne incoraggia lo studio, le modifiche e la ridistribuzione, presenta una serie di vantaggi. Tra questi oltre ai minori costi per l’amministrazione si possono ricordare: la disponibilità del codice sorgente, l’indipendenza da uno specifico fornitore e i benefici per l’industria informatica locale.
FREE SOFTWARE – La dicitura software libero sta a indicare tutti quegli applicativi rilasciati attraverso una licenza d’uso che permetta di: eseguire il programma per qualsiasi scopo, accedere alla struttura interna del programma (codice sorgente), studiarla ed eventualmente modificarla, ridistribuire il software in un numero di copie illimitato. Buona parte del software libero viene distribuito con la licenza GNU GPL (GNU General Public License), scritta da Richard Stallman fondatore della Free Software Foundation.
IL RESTO D’ITALIA – Molte altre amministrazioni italiane si sono mosse o hanno intenzione di dirigersi verso il software libero. La più all’avanguardia è certamente la provincia di Bolzano che ha già migrato tutta la propria infrastruttura tecnica su standard aperti. Le regioni che hanno già una legge sull’uso del software libero sono: Emilia Romagna, Toscana e Umbria, mentre in via di approvazione sono il Friuli, la Lombardia e da oggi anche la Sardegna.
I PROBLEMI – Le regioni che hanno compiuto questo passo si trovano però a affrontare due tipologie di problemi piuttosto seri. La prima è squisitamente tecnica e riguarda la difficoltà di interfacciare le nuove strutture con tutta la complessità dei servizi digitali erogati dallo Stato, si pensi ad esempio alle infrastrutture informatiche dei Ministeri. Il secondo problema è di tipo politico amministrativo. Se una regione decide di passare al sistema Linux questo significa migrare l’intero Sistema Regione, ossia tutte le sue emanazioni: società controllate e collegate. Tuttavia si verifica spesso che Comuni e Province spingano in tutt’altra direzione non garantendo la piena compatibilità che pure sarebbe possibile con i dovuti accorgimenti. Tutto questo senza contare le scuole che, a parte quelle del Trentino, sono le più indietro di tutti.
LINUX DAY – A promuovere l’uso e la conoscenza del software libero però ci sono tantissime associazioni come i Linux User Group (LUG) e gruppi informali di appassionati e militanti politici come gli HackLab. In particolare tra pochi giorni, il 25 Ottobre ci sarà in tutta Italia il Linux Day, tra i molti non possiamo che segnalarvi i due che si svolgeranno proprio in Sardegna: a Cagliari e a Sassari.
